Dries Mangnus - Master Franchisee West Auckland, Waitakere

With a CV boasting senior management positions with leading corporates, Caltex and Air New Zealand, you might wonder why Dries Mangnus swapped a corporate career for Crest’s Auckland Master Franchise.

Dries was looking for a challenge, and Crest’s franchise system was tracking north, it was the time to grow for business in Auckland. It was risky setting up in Auckland’s volatile market. But Dries was used to starting from scratch. He’d just come off 18 months helping set up the corporate division of Travel.co.nz. He decided the challenge was worth it. “Crest was looking to cover Auckland. I bought the Master Franchise, starting with one and a half franchisees – one full time and one part time. Now I have over 50 franchises.”

With his background in corporate management, Dries was probably one of the few who could have achieved what he has. “Auckland is very different. There are 160 commercial cleaning companies for a start. The second thing is that the Auckland environment is different. There is less tolerance, less loyalty than the smaller centres. If you don’t do a good job here, you’re given a ‘Dear John’ email very quickly.”

Dries saw the potential, though. Besides – he wanted to continue his lifestyle. And that meant rolling up his sleeves. “Crest has done very well in Auckland. A – we’re still here and B – we’ve grown each year.

We have a good customer base that’s secure.” While building and managing over 50 franchisees, Dries has also secured more than 350 customers. Heading the list are some fairly impressive names – Fonterra, Smith and Smith, Initial Health Care, Infinity Solutions – it goes on.

Demanding to say the least, corporates are used to the best – they expect nothing less. Dries agrees that the modern business environment poses many challenges. Picking the right people is the first key – matching them with the right customers is also vital.

And good mindset means stressing to franchisees they’re in business, not working for someone else, according to Dries. “I like them to manage their own business. They’re the boss. I’m not the boss.” And with people from all walks of life – and cultures – Dries reckons he’s like Kofi Annan – head of United Nations. It means assisting franchisees beyond actual operation. Mentoring. Encouraging them to incorporate skills in and outside their business.

And the success stories are extraordinary. “People come in armed with very little and in five years they’ve paid off their franchise and bought their first house.”

While the service is important, newcomers soon learn it’s not about cleaning. “ We say to our franchisees this is a business. Most people have jobs. You have a business.” With the right tools, the right support Dries says franchisees create a safe income and long term security. Crest’s support network excels, everyone is encouraged to learn and develop. Even the management team keeps learning – putting strategies in place that ensure good outcomes. And that goes for Dries too. He’s in it for the long haul - aiming to double the number of franchisees within three years. Dries has no regrets about giving up corporate life. “Crest Auckland has been very successful, and I really enjoy the challenges the business brings. It’s great getting good feedback from customers as to the good job our franchisees are doing. I’m really satisfied when I hear positive praise from customers.”
