Kids reveal how they won Crest contest

Prasun Acharya was thrilled to deliver pizza to students at Devon Intermediate School, New Plymouth, as a reward for keeping their classroom clean and tidy.

These delighted kids were in pizza heaven after a visit to their school by CrestClean’s Taranaki Regional Manager Prasun Acharya.

Prasun delivered the special treat as a reward for Room 14 youngsters at Devon Intermediate School who were the shining stars of a CrestClean competition.

The Cleanest Classroom competition is run at many of the 350 schools throughout New Zealand that are cleaned by Crest franchisees. The classroom that is kept the cleanest in the school is awarded a certificate and a prize at the end of the term.

Grateful students gave a “thunderous” applause to Crest teams Angeline Krithi and Hiteshwar Nand, and Richard and Hilary De Groot, said Prasun.

School Principal Jenny Gellen and Room 14 teacher Danielle Hill were also present when the pizza prize was handed out.

Prasun said Danielle revealed the secret of how her students had managed to win the contest. A roster had been drawn up giving youngsters certain areas of their classroom they were responsible for keeping neat and tidy.

And a whiteboard in the classroom showed how the cleaning duties were allocated to the students.

“I was pleasantly surprised when Miss Danielle showed me their ‘squad board’ they had drawn up to keep the classroom tidy every day,” said Prasun.

“She was very proud her students had helped to keep the school clean. The children and Miss Danielle expressed their gratitude for CrestClean organising the pizza lunch for the class.

“We had gluten free, vegetarian and non-vegetarian pizzas and the kids loved the treat,” he added.

“Motivating and rewarding the kids is a perfect way to educate them about keeping their surroundings clean.”

Prasun said when kids keep their classrooms tidy it reduces the workload for CrestClean personnel, who can then maximise their time in other areas and work more efficiently on their cleaning duties.

The competition not only fosters a sense of pride in their surroundings, it also gives kids the incentive to work together to win a special treat.

“It is a win-win for everyone. I was so glad to be a part of this and to feel the vibe of the classroom,” said Prasun.

“Being surrounded by lots of smiley faces and being thanked for our effort to keep the school clean was such a wonderful experience.”
